Welcome to Year 2 - Pine Class

Welcome back to the Autumn Term! We hope you had a lovely Summer break! This is where you can find out about our learning in Year 2, our current topics and any useful websites to help you at home. Don’t forget to follow the school instagram page to see more of what we get up to!

Autumn Term  Term

This term we are exploring a project titled ‘Movers and Shakers’. In the Movers and Shakers project, your child will learn five statements from Dawson's model that will help them identify people who are historically significant and use the words year, decade and century to describe dates and times. They will study the life and impact of a significant person in the locality and of 10 significant individuals from around the world. They will complete in-depth studies of significant explorers Christopher Columbus and Neil Armstrong, and significant activists Emmeline Pankhurst and Rosa Parks and think carefully about the impact of their actions. The children will also carry out an independent study of a significant person from the past and learn about people who are significant today. They will also learn how significant people are commemorated.

Alongside this topic, the children will be learning about Human Survival (Science), Exploring Colours (Art), Remarkable recipes (DT) and Navrati (RE).

In addition, we will be following the national curriculum requirements of English, Maths, Science, RHSE and Computing.

In Literacy, we will be reading four different texts. These will be - Jim and the Beanstalk, Wolves, The Journey Home and We Are Water Protectors.

In Maths we will be developing our understanding of place value by identifying tens and ones in numbers. Then Year will be moving onto Addition and Subtraction, as well as a Shape unit.

P.E. will take place on Monday and Tuesdays, where we will continue to wear our P.E kit to school. The kit consist of a sky blue polo, royal blue Oaklands jumper, royal blue cotton shorts, socks and suitable sports trainers. For health and safety reasons earrings and watches should be removed for all P.E lessons and long hair must be tied up. This term they will be focusing on their Ball Skills with Miss Willer and Fundamental skills with Mrs Bissmire.

Computing - This term Year 2 will be learning about coding, online safety and spreadsheets. We use Purple Mash for our computing lessons which is a child friendly site if you would like to access this at home for any extra practice.

Music - During Music, Year two will be taking part in two units called Folk songs and Jupiter through our new Get Set 4 Music Scheme.

Homework

Reading:  Daily reading -  Reading books will be changed on a Friday and each pupil will take two books home depending on their level of reading ability. Please make sure children have their books available in school every day.

Work from an area of the curriculum: This will be given out on a Friday and to be returned the following Wednesday in homework books. (Every other week)

TTRS and Numbots:  Please practice on either of these apps to continue to improve their Maths fluency.

If you have any concerns, or questions regarding your child, please contact the school office (admin@oaklands.herts.sch.uk) to arrange a meeting.
